Annual Charity Ball
Held every Spring
The Washington Health System Charity Ball is a treasured tradition with roots dating back to 1931, when it was established by the Washington Hospital Auxiliary. Despite the challenges of the Great Depression, the dedicated women of the Auxiliary planned and carried out the first Charity Ball, creating what quickly became the community’s premier holiday social event while raising vital funds for the hospital.
During the 1930s, proceeds from Charity Balls and bridge parties proved invaluable, supporting the hospital’s building fund and enabling the purchase of essential equipment, including a resuscitator, anesthesia machine, incubator, electrically heated bassinets, as well as radios and phonographs for the nurses’ residence, and dishwashers and sterilizers.
Today, this proud legacy continues through the Washington Greene Health Foundation. Each year, a fun and exciting theme is chosen that makes this event an experience like no other in our community. Millions of dollars raised over the years continue to support programs and services at UPMC Washington and promote the health and well-being of residents throughout Washington and Greene counties.
