Our Vision: An Independent Washington Health System In Our Communities
Jon and Carol Adler’s 50-year commitment and their planned legacy gift will support Washington Health System for years to come.
“Washington Health System has played a major role in our lives over the past half-century. I want WHS Washington Hospital to continue to be the fine facility where I was a patient more than once and always treated with respect.”
— CAROL ADLER
Jon Adler, MD, a retired Family Medicine Physician, and his wife Carol’s love for Washington Health System began when Dr. Adler completed a junior internship at Washington Hospital in the summer of 1963. The Canonsburg native was studying at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. After graduation, the couple looked at other educational sites, including a few institutions out west. However, they decided Washington Hospital was the best choice for Dr. Adler’s internship and for establishing a practice.
At Washington Hospital, Dr. Adler served as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine Practice, Medical Staff President from 1989–91, Medical Staff Representative to the Washington Hospital Board of Trustees, and a Washington Hospital Board Trustee until retiring from medical practice in 1999.
Carol volunteered in the Washington Hospital Medical Staff Library after their two children were older. She has had a few other volunteer jobs at the hospital and at Washington Health System Primary Care – Lakeside in McMurray.
An Independent Washington Health System
Dr. Adler and Carol have supported Washington Health System for over 50 years and have given every year since. They have also chosen to make a legacy gift, including WHS Washington Hospital in their will. Their motivation was to give to a facility that meant a lot to them over the years, while stressing the importance of maintaining independence.
“When I was on the Medical Staff and Hospital Board, there was discussion about affiliation with a larger Pittsburgh hospital,” Dr. Adler says. “But Washington Hospital was doing very well on its own, and we didn’t need to share the expenses of a large medical facility. We could do better with cost containment for our patients, and we did.”
Thanks to Dr. Adler and Carol’s philanthropic support of Washington Health System Foundation, Washington Health System will remain an independent, first-class health system providing patient care in communities throughout greater Washington and Greene counties—now and into the future.
